My focus is IT Entrepreneurship and Software Engineering The initial courses are graduate level, taught in the Spring and Fall, "IT Entrepreneurship" and "Software Engineering for IT Entrepreneurs".

BlogBridge is an advanced blog and feed reader for power users. BlogBridge is organized as an Open Source project at SourceForge.net, with developers in the US, Ukraine and Moldova. The product has over five thousand downloads, several thousand users, and about 1500 source code downloads. It is in active development and has achieved a degree of visibility in the space. With OSDV I have been responsible for the architecture and product design, and overall leadership of a major component of the software suite, the Election Management System. In addition I have extensively worked with election officials to understand their requirements, bringing them into the development process. Further, I’ve been part of the strategic team of the organization, formulating plans, organizational, technical and process questions.

Salas Associates is a consutlancy, focusing on technology strategy, software development methodology, systems architecture, collaboration Strategy and architecture. Clients are small and medium sized Software and Bio Tech firms.Projects have ranged from 1-2 weeks, to over 9 months of on-site work. I am often brought in by the CEO or CTO of a small software firm, also some times through an investor or board member. I have served as interim CTO and co-founder (for example for wis.dm), or to introduce new development engineering methodology (for example at iUpload Inc.), or to spearhead a new strategic product direction (for example at ATG, Inc.).

Developed and taught a totally re-thought version of the required Entrepreneurship course, known colloquially as FBE ("Fundamentals of Business Entrepreneurship".) My version of it is subtitled 'The Technology Startup.' The course encourages students to learn and apply Lean Startup concepts and methods to a project of their own conception with a team of 4 other students (the course has around 54 students registered.) Olin College is one of the top engineering schools in the US. I am very lucky to be working there.

Bootup Academy is an educational program that combines classroom workshops with hands on labs where students can put what they are learning into practice. Our courses are taught by experienced university teachers and practicing entrepreneurs, working together to create a unique learning experience.

My first assignment was to design a brand new set of three courses for undergraduates and graduate students. The goal was to teach our students about real world, entrepreneurial innovation in the software and hardware sphere. We created new curriculum that fit the needs of students and the University.These courses were taught during an intense boot-camp experience over two months of full time teaching and student interaction. The courses were a great success and we are now developing two more courses for the coming year.

North Bridge is a Venture Capital firm focused on IT and Telecom technologies. As Venture Partner I had three kinds of responsibilities. I was responsible for technical due diligence on new projects being considered by North Bridge. I also would pair off with entrepreneurs with highly promising ideas to work side by side with them to help bring the projects to a fundable state. And from time to time I would advise and consult to existing portfolio companies helping them from a technology, software and strategy perspective. (Note: my work at North Bridge was half time, and under the umbrella of Salas Associates.)

eRoom Technology (originally Instinctive Technology) was founded by Jeffrey Beir and me in 1996, with a vision to create a new kind of internet based collaborative application specifically designed for the extended enterprise. eRoom was backed by North Bridge Venture Partners, Matrix Venture Partners and other leading venture firms.)As CTO, I was responsible at a high level, for eRoom’s Technology and Product Strategy. I set the direction for the eRoom family of products, ensuring that the product roadmap supported the company strategy, that the products built meet our customers needs, and that the technologies employed fit well with both our customers technology roadmaps as well as the overall direction of the industry. At different times I had responsibility for the Software Engineering and Product Management organizations.

Technology development and design

Was the original developer of Lotus Improv, a product that subsequently was credited with the being the first to include the now famous "Pivot Table" feature found in Microsoft Excel and other products. I came up with the idea as an R&D Project, and subsequently was able to secure funding to build it into a Lotus Development product that won several awards and was hailed as a breakthrough in software.In addition, worked on an early platform for electronic publishing based on Lotus Notes. Also worked on several early mobile products.
