Position Role:This was a senior HR Manager role within the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Product Group working with MDs and operational GMs. It managed the team delivering human resources and organisational development services to the four Dampier Salt sites in Western Australia, as well as RTIO commercial operations in Perth, Asia, Europe and North America. This role expanded over time to include responsibility for the human resources functions at the HIsmelt iron production plant at Kwinana, Rio Tinto Marine, the Rio Tinto Australia office/Office of the MD of Rio Tinto Australia and RTIO Sales and Marketing/RTIO Asia. Both the Rio Tinto Marine and RTIO Sales and Marketing/RTIO Asia organisations had global reach and this role provided the strategic HR leadership across their global operations.This role had up to five Superintendent level direct reports with a further twelve indirect reports. Achievements:• Organisation and facilitation of a large scale (150 plus employees) retrenchment and redeployment exercise at Kwinana, with minimal media coverage and no litigation;• Participation in a strategic organisational review of the global operations of RTIO Sales and Marketing function, in order to have its organisational structure better reflect the move to spot and index pricing of seaborne traded iron ore;• Lead the negotiation for the renewal of a tug services contract leading to new contractor at lower rates and no industrial relations issues in the changeover of contractors;• Negotiated and had ratified a collective industrial agreement covering Dampier Salt production and maintenance employees to provide stable employee relations outcomes during the introduction of the Fair Work Act 2009;• The insourcing of the Dampier Salt apprenticeship program, which lead to a saving of 30% in the cost of employing apprentices, as well as better training outcomes and employee engagement.
