CurrentAcoustic Bait Technologies (ABT) is a proud First Nations start-up company, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. We are developing an alternative bait system for the lobster fishery by pursuing the use of recorded acoustic lobster sounds (signals) to modify the behaviour of lobsters to attract them into lobster traps. Ultimately, we plan on producing a commercial acoustic bait device, (the “Acoustic Bait Box”), consisting of a waterproof casing and transmitter equipped with a power source and digital playback circuitry to project recordings underwater while mounted on the inside of a lobster trap. Our research is a collaborative partnership between ABT, Dr. David Barclay (Oceanography, Dalhousie University; expertise in underwater acoustics), and Dr. Russell Wyeth (Biology, St. Francis Xavier University; expertise in lobster behaviour). We have worked with a variety of federal, provincial and academic funding organizations (i.e. Nova Scotia Business Inc., Ocean Frontier Institute, Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ocean Startup Challenge - Canada's Ocean Supercluster and MITACS) to advance our research. ABT works closely with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in our scientific research programs and licensing and is now preparing to utilize DFO’s “Atlantic Fisheries Fund” to support our continuing research this summer and fall. If you would like to learn more about ABT please watch our 8-minute ABT video which can be found in Contact Information (under Website Link). Since video production, Dr. David Barclay (Dalhousie University - Oceanography) has been added to our team and we have advanced our research, collected and analyzed much more data and furthered our understanding of the sounds lobsters make and how they communicate in their natural habitat. Our research is continuing and we are looking forward to developing the technology which will attract lobsters into a trap using acoustic bait.
