I write, speak and consult about new city building strategies; moving beyond traditional quality of life measures to prioritizing the economic, social and environmental benefits of infrastructure for the human spirit found in joyful cities. I am co-author, along with Scott Higgins -President of HIP Developments, of The JOY Experiments – Starting A New Conversation On City Building. This book provides the following perspective:For well over 50 years, our society has prioritized quality of life in terms of individual materialism and economic efficiency. This focus on individual living has reached its ultimate conclusion - the age of isolationism, or more bluntly put - Social Recession in which withdrawal, depression, fear of strangers and change is crippling society’s ability to unite against the major challenges of our time and collaboratively find inventive solutions. The reversal of this trend starts in cities because throughout history cities have been the habitat of the human spirit - that source of invention, resilience, tolerance and creativity that we so desperately need. Through my writing, speaking and consulting I help city builders meet this challenge and evolve into society builders through "good density" strategies, inclusive identity building and public space design that priorities free public play and cultural storytelling. This is a new category of city building called Infrastructure for the Human Spirit; a series of strategies and tactics developed by Scott Higgins, President of HIP Developments and myself. If we want to change the world - we must change cities.
