I like to say that the two people who have influenced my life the most are Steve Irwin and Jesus Christ. I care about animals, I care about people, and I have spent most of my adult life trying to bring the two together. As a kid my curiosity for nature took me into creeks, up trees, and under rocks and logs, looking for any critters I could find. Eventually that curiosity grew into a passion and even though I have had many interests and hobbies come and go in my life, that passion for wildlife has remained. I haven’t always had a heart for people. I’ve often heard people say “I hate people but love animals” and my work as a Humane Officer has shown me plenty of examples to support why someone would feel this way. However, working so closely with people and animals has taught me that they aren’t so different. For instance, people and animals are often times products or victims of their surroundings and circumstances. I decided a long time ago that I wanted to do everything I can to help those that can’t help themselves: animals and humans alike. So far this mission has led me to some amazing places that yielded invaluable experience such as the following:• extensive practice communicating to large groups, in public settings, one on one, and with angry or belligerent people• handling a wide variety of animals including venomous snakes, raptors, amphibians, arachnids, and aggressive dogs • designing and implementing program schedules, lesson plans, summer camps, community events, and fundraisers• managing volunteers, casting vision, inspiring team members, and displaying strong leadership • I am also a very quick thinker, I do not get stressed in high pressure situations, and I often see unforeseen circumstances and events as challenges to be tackled, rather than setbacks. I am very excited to continue to build on my experience and skills as I work to fulfill my mission to help those around me.
