In this postdoc experience, I was teamed up with Prof. Kirk Ziegler at Chemical Engineering Dept./ Material Science & Engineering Dept. in synthesizing Kevlar-coated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and using them as an ingredient fabricating nanocomposites:• It is an U.S. patented technology.• Synthesis of SWCNTs suspension by homogenization, ultrasonication and ultracentrifugation techniques• Synthesis of SWCNTs/ Kevlar composites by interfacial polymerization, followed by vacuum filtration of Kevlar-coated SWCNTs reaction-mixture solution.• Characterization of SWCNTs and Kevlar-coated SWCNTs by Photoluminescence, Ramanspectrascopy, SEM, FT-IR, and DSC• SWCNTs and SWCNTs/ Kevlar composite modulus and hardness measurements by triboindentation test methods• Kevlar-coated SWCNT nanocomposites has application in improving materials surface hardness and wear resistance, and in preparation of high performance composites.• Nylon 6, 10 coated-SWCNT and polymer nanocomposites • Technical support and teaming up with SCF Processing, Ltd., Ireland.• Muthiah, Palanikkumaran; Cong, Kun; Xia, Ju; Curtis Taylor and Ziegler, Kirk J. PhD dissertation:• I worked with Prof. Wolfgang Sigmund in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Goodyear Tire company on fabrication of "Responsive Nanocomposites." • I was in-charge of developing responsive nanofiber mats by electrospinning process that switched between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic states in a few seconds when changes in environmental temperature.Other projects:• I developed Teflon AF nanofiber mats exhibiting superhydrophobic surface properties by coaxial electrospinning process. • I synthesized biodegradable CaCO3, CaP core-shell microcapsules by a novel environmentally benign polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) process.Details:• Electrospinning instrument set-up, PS/PNIPA, Teflon AF, PCL + Ceria nanofibers, and TiO2 nanofibers (sol-gel chemistry) • Rapid Response Nanofibers - response time test method development, apparatus design and set-up, and analysis of results• Coaxial needle design, and Teflon AF-PVDF core-sheath nanofibers• Contact Angle (CA) Goniometer - static and dynamic CA values, CA at various low and high temperatures, and set-up.• PP surface modification for superhydrophobic and oleophobic properties.• CaCO3 and CaP core-shell microcapsules - containing model drug compounds, SEM surface morphology, UV-Vis spectrophotometer. • SEM, TEM, optical microscopy, confocal microscopy, DSC, FESEM, and EDS; Statistical Design of Experiments (DOE).Summary: • I have gained experience in mentoring 3 students on core-shell, and electrospinning polycaprolactone (PCL) with ceria nanoparticles projects.• In light of successful completion, my PhD work was patented, published them in 2 top journals, presented at 2 national and international conferences. • Prof. Sigmund is an excellent advisor and mentor whose interests are: "Out of the box thinking" and "Disruptive technology," worth lessons to learn, which I did.

• I again joined with Prof. Ashwini Agrawal group (SMITA Research Labs) to develop acid or anionic dyeable acrylic fibers on a consultancy project for Thai Acrylic Fiber Co., Ltd. • I was in-charge of developing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers with cationic monomers that are capable of undergoing single-bath acid dyeing process with wool materials.• Free radical, aqueous suspension polymerization of PAN copolymers • Polymerization reactor set-up• PAN copolymers: AN + MMA + acid dyeable co-monomers• Acid dyeable co-monomers with "amide" or "amine" functionality• PAN copolymers with different molar ratios of acid dyeable co-monomers, yield calculations • Evaluation of PAN copolymers - Dye exhaustion studies using spectrophotometer; and comparison of results with pure Nylon, Wool materials.• Technical report writings, technical presentations to research sponsor, and transfer of technology• My PI Prof. Agrawal and and Co-PI Prof. Manjeet Jassal have been the great mentors and my colleagues from these days are still my best friends.
