I discovered the power of Robotics Education while attending University of Houston, and have witnessed countless students come to love STEM through many extracurricular programs.I began my educational career as a middle school science teacher at Burbank Middle School, and dedicated my time to providing the highest quality learning experience I could offer. As a science teacher, I focused on hands on, project based learning. At Hamilton Middle School, I helped my students reach their goal of passing the Science standardized tests, while elevating the Commended Performance rate to the highest on campus. When the opportunity rose to teach middle school robotics, it was a natural and exciting progression.Hamilton Robotics has gained notoriety throughout the district as one of the most advanced programs for its grade level. We were one of the few programs in the city to teach RobotC, a high school level programming language, to middle school students. We competed in competitions against high schools, and it was not uncommon to find ourselves the only middle school team to do so. We further expanded our program by becoming the first middle school to introduce our students to Arduino, an electronics platform that uses the C programming language.At Mickey Leland, through our awarded robotics program, we continued providing high level competition to inner-city students. We have competed in FIRST Robotics Competition, an international competition in which students design, build, and program robots to complete a variety of tasks. Using the WPI library in Java, students incorporate sophisticated algorithms for motor control, sensor input, and image recognition.
