About Samuel Howell

Dr. Samuel Howell is an Ocean Worlds Scientist engaged in the study and exploration of potentially habitable environments and life beyond Earth. His work focuses on understanding the processes that make the deep, hidden oceans of our solar system's icy moons potentially habitable, and guiding the development and testing of technologies to explore them. Within the Planetary Interiors and Geophysics group at NASA JPL, Dr. Howell supports the exploration of Ocean Worlds as Project Staff Scientist on the Europa Clipper mission. He further leads science development for multiple future concepts to enable planetary ice shell and ocean access.Samuel is the Principal Investigator of the NASA-funded ORCAA analogue mission, which will conduct access a subglacial lake in the Juneau Icefield with a planetary “cryobot” to simulate a potential future mission to Europa. Additionally, he is lead scientist for JPL's PRIME cryobot concept, CryoComm through-ice communications system, and NASA’s SWIM technology concept for planetary ocean exploration. He has led polar expeditions in support of these projects to demonstrate technologies on Earth that someday might fly to the outer solar system. He has additionally explored the Earth's oceans, from equator to poles, aboard scientific research vessels using remote imaging and geophysical techniques.Samuel obtained his B.S. in Engineering Physics from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Thermal Fluid Mechanics. He obtained his M.S. and PhD in Geology and Geophysics University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he explored planetary-scale process through studies of local surface features. His research on Earth, the first-discovered Ocean World, garnered national attention, including a 2016 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award for innovation detecting and predicting motions on the San Andreas Fault. Dr. Howell has broadly shared the excitement surrounding the search for life within our solar system in documentary and broadcast news media, radio interviews in local, state, and national broadcasts, various podcasts and live streams, and numerous print and online news outlets.

Listed skills include Physics, Numerical Analysis, Matlab, Geophysics, and 18 others.

Samuel Howell work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Postdoctoral Scholar

Current

Pasadena, Ca, Us

I am currently applying my expertise on mid-ocean ridges to study dilational bands (tectonic features formed in extension) observed on the surface of Europa, a Galilean moon of Jupiter. Europa has a subsurface water ocean that is covered by a thick water ice shell, is tidally heated as it orbits Jupiter, and is a more likely target for finding life within our own solar system. I plan to use numerical models to see if extension can expose old ocean material at these dilational bands.

Jan 2017 - Present

Graduate Assistant

Honolulu, Hi, Us

Mid-ocean ridge research foci include tectonomagmatic processes, magmatic and tectonic segmentation, fault initiation, and the nature of abyssal hill evolution and growth. I have also looked at far-field fault deformation due to earthquake cycle loading at the San Andreas Fault System in Southern California. I explore these problems using dynamic 2D and 3D numerical models, statistical modeling, and observational techniques.

May 2010 - Dec 2016

Technician

Honolulu, Hi, Us

I piloted a 30 kHz deep-towed sidescan sonar (IMI 30) on a ~5 week cruise at the active spreading center in the southern Marianas aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson (cruise TN273). Aboard, my responsibilities included watch standing as a sonar pilot, maintaining altitude over obstacles and keeping an eye on data quality, towbody position and movement, and winch operation. While off watch, I aided in preparation for the deployment and recovery of the towfish, and laboratory set up and tear down.

Dec 2011 - Jan 2012

Teaching Assistant

Honolulu, Hi, Us

I taught two sections Geology 101 Lab. I was responsible for conducting labs, grading work, leading nearby field trips and assisting on an inter-island field trip, and assigning overall grades at the end of the semester.

Jan 2011 - May 2011

Private Contractor

Xenon Geosciences

On an occasional basis, I contributed to the collection of topographic survey data, near-surface seismic data acquisition, data manipulation, client/site research, and the generation of maps which are used to create storm water pollution prevention plans.

May 2009 - Jul 2010

Student Researcher

Universität Des Saarlandes

I aided in the investigation of the effect that various trichlorosilanes applied to a native silicon oxide layer on a silicon wafer had on the slippage of polystyrene films. This was done using atomic force microscopy, dewetting experiments, and water-silane contact angle analysis.
