Qualified and IBMS accredited Band 5 Biomedical Scientist. Started training as a Virology specialist when undertaking my specialist training portfolio.This Biomedical Scientist role is rotational post through all of the sections of a large-scale Public Health England pathology laboratory including:-General Bacteriology including respiratory and enterics.-Virology including serology, and isolation.-Molecular diagnostics for Bacteriology and Virology.-Regional Centre for Mycobacteriology.-Antiviral susceptibility services-To work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high quality microbiology service in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.-To assist in the efficient day-to-day running of an area in a section of the laboratory, to be able to rotate through all the different sections in the laboratory and to assist in the supervision and training of trainee BMSs or HSSWs.-To assist in any PHE co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. a Bioterrorism incident or a major disease outbreak.

My role as a Healthcare Scientist Support Worker aims to provide technical and clerical support to the scientific services within the microbiology department at Heartlands Hospital. This is achieved by working alongside the Biomedical Scientists in a wide range of laboratory duties including the receipt and preparation of clinical samples, registration of patient information onto the pathology computer system, processing of clinical samples on automated equipment (eg. Previ Isola automated agar plate inoculation system, UF-1000 Automated Urine Particle Analyzer) and involvement in the centralised telephone enquiry service. Experience has also been gained working in containment level three laboratories, as a part of the on site enteric laboratory, as well as working with TB samples in the Midlands Regional Centre for Mycobacteriology.As well as day-to-day responsibilities, HSSW's are expected to partake in yearly UKAS/CPA audits to assist the laboratory in maintaining its CPA accreditation. Other duties include monitoring and maintenance of laboratory equipment, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment and laboratory areas, disposal of tissue and patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelines, all whilst working in accordance with laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures.

This role involved working in a UKAS accredited microbiology laboratory as part of a large team of technicians carrying out quality assurance testing of food products, food shelf life trials and internal and external environmental monitoring.Most common tests performed include the enumeration of total viable counts, total colony counts on potable water, Enterobacteriaceae, Coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus, E.coli, Clostridium perfringens, yeast and moulds, Pseudomonas spp, Bacillus cereus, Lactic Acid Bacteria, Salmonella spp and Listeria spp. All of which I show competence in performing and reading.Other tasks include aseptic sampling of foods and sample preparation.
