I combine principle-driven mathematical models with data-driven statistical models to understand complex systems. I believe the former not only help explain the data we observe, but also identify false correlations in the "large p small n" paradigm. This is particularly useful when the complex system is us; I believe the last 50 years of molecular biology research, combined with modern technology, can lead to sensitive and accurate diagnostics for therapeutic decision support.
