About Paul Michael Leonardo Atienza

I am a qualitative researcher of digital media platforms, race, gender, and sexuality. I have a background in higher education administrative coordination, and am energized working on the problems of designing an equitable future with human-centered design principles.Paul Michael Leonardo Atienza is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Atienza is a 2019-2020 Graduate Fellow for the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities. He completed a graduate certificate in gender and women's studies in addition to affiliations with the Department of Asian American Studies and the Seeing Systems INTERSECT group, an interdisciplinary collaboration among Urbana-Champaign scholars interested in the role of vision in technological systems. His research seeks to elaborate on the human in relation to mobile digital technologies. His multi-sited ethnography, "The Promise of Intimacy," investigates the lives of gay Filipino men who use geolocative dating apps, social media, and messaging platforms on their mobile devices to seek potential intimate partners. He argues against the notion that digital technologies are making it easier and quicker to connect people. Examining study participants’ practices and beliefs on and about mobile digital media, Atienza demonstrates how these technologies shape people’s understanding of time and space, emotional attachments, self-presentation, and concepts of social difference such as race, class, sex, and gender. The research questions of this project add to the goals of queer studies and anthropological inquiry that unpack socializing processes in upholding concepts of culture as natural or normal. Atienza brings gender and sexuality scholarship from multiple fields such as Asian Studies and Asian American Studies in conversation with each other while building upon queer of color critique and postcolonial analysis in science and technology studies.

Online ethnographic study of Guys4Men.com, the most popular social networking website among men-seeking-men (MSM) in Island Southeast Asia during the mid to late 2000s. I analyzed user profile text and images focusing on choice of pre-designed categories for sex and ethnicity. From online semistructured interviews, my study found that gay Filipino men were selecting to identify as bisexual because they understood the sexual orientation to be tied to masculine gender expression. Many believe that masculinity is what most men are looking for in MSM connections. The choose this sexual identity despite not knowing what it means.
