Research Scientist: The primary objective of BioProtection Systems (BPS) was to develop viral vaccines for the protection and treatment of individuals who may have been exposed to viral agents considered potential bioterror threats.- Led and assisted R&D teams in the development of new vaccine technologies / candidates including viral chimerics (RNA and DNA).- Monitored and manipulated the host immune response to improve outcomes.- Obtained key grants and government contracts for the company’s core technology.- Developed safety protocols / procedures and secured Federal licenses to allow the agents to be handled and shipped.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow: This position (Postdoctoral Fellow) was part of the Infectious Disease Department (established by the recruitment of senior personnel from the CDC);- Assisted in the development of the West Nile project and associated BSL-3 facility.- Assisted in the development of siRNA as a tool for the study of viral pathogenesis and to aid in the search for therapeutic or preventative measures.

Postdoctoral Research Associate: The research embarked upon, was to examine the molecular basis of West Nile Virus pathogenesis – both Lineage I and II, as an aid to identify vaccine candidates. This included:- Development of a stable infectious clone of Lineage I.- Further attenuated lineage II infectious clones.- Identified and characterized new / novel viral clones, replicons (chimeric viruses).- Identified the function / targets on viral genomic sequences relating to pathogenesis.- Identified genomic differences related to the disparity in the pathogenesis observed between lineage I and II.

The aim of the project was to investigate the host responses to Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) and the potential biomarkers for clinical outcome.

The aim of the research was to utilize the Diphtheria Toxin A-chain (DTA), to produce anti-viral compounds, based on carbocyclic nucleosides formation. This research was performed in collaboration with Glaxo-Wellcome (UK).
