The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program seeks to enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between the people of Japan and those of other nations. The Program aims to enhance foreign language education and promote international exchange at the local level through the fostering of ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth alike.The objectives of the Program are being achieved by offering JET Program participants the opportunity to serve in local authorities as well as public and private elementary, junior high and senior high schools in Japan.Was responsible for preparing and teaching 22 elementary school lessons per-week, across 8 different schools and over 500 kids. Full discretion was left in my hands regarding the direction, work load, and objectives of both fifth and sixth grade English lessons across each school, as well as working with each homeroom teacher to ensure a positive relationship between myself and school faculty. As a public employee, I was expected to uphold the standard of Japanese professionalism, punctuality, and behavior befitting of a public servant. As an English instructor in Japan, I was also expected to maintain a balance of English within the classroom and Japanese outside of class. In addition to my professional responsibilities as a teacher, I also oversaw other assistant language teachers within my area as a Regional Advisor, acting as a link between their local employers and the larger JET support system. RA requirements included planning welcome parties for newly arrived teachers, preparing disaster relief contact systems in case of an emergency, and helping to acclimate other participants to life in rural Japan.
