In the pursuit of providing exceptional patient care and fostering a financially sustainable healthcare system, the continuous and methodical evaluation of healthcare practices is of utmost importance. By merging the principles of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and Value-Based Health Care (VBHC), patient care can be enhanced through the incorporation of patient feedback and the rigorous examination of outcome data. VBHC relies on plan-do-check-act cycles to translate research findings into tangible improvements in clinical practice.Research holds a pivotal role in healthcare evaluation, particularly in the realm of orthopedic surgery. As the chair of a taskforce dedicated to determining the research agenda for the Dutch Orthopedic Association, I am at the forefront of efforts to create nationwide and international research consortia that prioritize patient-focused outcomes. To achieve this, we conduct multi-center trials with methodological rigor, encouraging collaboration between hospitals.Throughout my academic career, I have concentrated on introducing robust research methodology into the field of orthopedic surgery. My experience as the Founding Director of JointResearch OLVG Amsterdam has allowed me to establish a leading research organization committed to evidence-based orthopedics and fostering research collaborations. My published works, which include over 200 peer-reviewed articles in esteemed publications like JAMA, Lancet, and NEJM, emphasize the critical role of research in improving patient outcomes and championing evidence-based practice.In essence, healthcare evaluation is an indispensable component of delivering effective and efficient healthcare.
