About Poonam Advani
I started my career as a student journalist at Mumbai Mirror and reported on issues impacting students across Mumbai. Our team of student ambassadors was disbanded by the paper a year later, but that experience left me with more than a few articles in print and a final paycheck – a growing desire to write and make an impact.I spent the next few years building a content writing agency from the ground up. At its peak, it employed 3 full time writers and clients from across the US, UK and India. Although I loved living the freelance life, I took a break to study in Melbourne, Australia.I came here in 2011 and studied accounting and financial management. I topped that with a CPA and built my experience as an accountant within medium and large businesses in the city. I also spent time mentoring students as a La Trobe Alumni and volunteered with Opportunities Australia. Very recently, I got an opportunity to immerse myself in the Victorian Startup ecosystem through a project - creating a list of 101 South Asian Australian startup founders. Urgently needed and well timed, this list showcased the power of the south asian diaspora in the Australia, from employing hundreds to creating life altering, impactful and sustainable businesses. A happy co-incidence thereafter led me to Press Play Ventures, a partnership that delivers Press Play, 12 week pre-accelerator program for women who want to go from employment to entrepreneurship. With the support of LaunchVic, we're committed to infusing at least 100 women founders into the Victorian startup ecosystem by 2025.---My experiences in Australia, over the last 11 years, first as an international student, then as a citizen (by naturalization) are now central to my identity and the professional journey I want to undertake.
