About Mark O'Connell

I'm enjoying developing the Apricot Centre (CIC) Wellbeing Service for Children and Families working mainly across East Anglia and South Devon. ACWS consists of clusters of experienced and creative therapists working within a team approach to provide robust flexible services. Our nature base is on an organic/permacultural/biodynamic farm where we also offer nature-based activities for young people, their families and schools.I have for worked for many years with children and families as a process-oriented psychotherapist and now Child Psychotherapist. I have also a strong interest in nature and sustainability, and value the potential of a relationship with nature for a sense of wellbeing. My central work is based around Dr Arnold Mindell's processwork, and i use this to complement attachment, attunement, traumawork and neurological approaches. I am inspired by Dr Gary Reiss's application of process-oriented psychology with children, families and community. I use Process-Oriented Psychology as the basis of my child psychotherapy approach, alongside an understanding of attachment, family (systems) therapies and traumawork. Process Oriented Psychology or 'Process Work' is an awareness-based psychotherapeutic approach with roots in Jungian Depth Psychology, Taoism, Shamanism, Systems Theory, with the focus on bringing awareness to life processes, rather than focussing on attempting to reach specific goals. A key factor in Process Work in my view is that the feedback leads the way, and in many ways this is the central evidence base of the approach. For the past two decades I have been gradually building the application of Process Oriented approaches in working with children and families. Most recently I am applying for NHS funding towards a research study on Process Oriented Attunement methods in working with the Looked After and Adopted Child's relationship with their carer/parent in the early part of their placement/adoption.
