I was appointed to help organise an event bringing people together to discuss the current state of the historic built environment in Glasgow - the city's older buildings, spaces and places. To support the event and help inform discussion I:- focused on identifying gaps in evidence- critically examined available information to pose provocative questions and prompt new thinking- worked extensively to curate an invite list for the event, thinking laterally about who was implicated in and affected by Glasgow's built environment, and extending discussion beyond the "usual suspects"- presented information to all participants in an accessible, infographic-style snapshot report which encouraged critical engagement with the current state of Glasgow's historic built environment, collecting, combining and analysing data from a wide range of sources- created and published an interactive online map (using QGIS, Open Street Map and Leaflet) of information about Glasgow's historic built environment, for the general public to interrogate.
Interview-based research assessing the state of transparency in land ownership in Scotland. The Scotland report is part of a larger study which tested a country framework for assessing transparency in the ownership of land, using an interview-driven approach in Scotland and a literature-based approach in Sierra Leone. It was discussed at the World Bank's 2018 Land and Poverty conference in Washington D.C. In many countries, unidentified private individuals and legal entities, the hidden or beneficial owners, retain significant economic benefits from land. A lack of transparency can make it harder for affected communities and or governments to hold legal entities accountable for land use decision-making.The research was a joint initiative by Transparency International, Global Witness, IALTA, Trócaire, and Community Land Scotland, and was supported by International Land Coalition.Community Land Scotland published the Scotland report in March 2018.
