About Patrick Mulder

My research focuses on the immune response to burn injuries, aiming to understand how immune reactions influence wound healing, antibacterial activity, and overall recovery in burn patients. I seek to improve treatment by analyzing patient blood and skin samples to observe cellular and cytokine reactions following burn injury. Utilizing cell culture, advanced microscopy and flow cytometry techniques, he gains detailed insights into the cellular processes. To summarize and make use of data from animal experiments, we developed a comprehensive database that compiles existing literature on the cellular and cytokine responses to burn injuries. At the Burn Research Lab, we have created a full skin equivalent model that simulates burn wound healing and inflammatory processes. This model will be used to test therapeutic interventions, with the goal of improving burn treatment while avoiding the need for experimental animals.Work experience in oncology clinical trials (trial assistant and proposals) and infection diagnostics (medical analyst). Internships at the VUmc Amsterdam (cancer immunology), University of Calgary Canada (cystic fibrosis and lung infection) and AMC Amsterdam (antimicrobial peptides and bacterial infection). Graduated in Biomedical Sciences (immunology and infectious diseases) at the VU Amsterdam and Biology and Medical Laboratory Research (microbiology) at the Hogeschool Leiden. Publications in Frontiers in Immunology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and PNAS.

Management and execution of our research project centered around the immune response to burn injury. We aim to understand how immune reactions affect wound healing and recovery in burn patients and will search for ways to improve treatment. We study patient blood and skin samples to understand the cellular and cytokine reactions following burn injury. For this, we use advanced microscopy and flow cytometric analysis techniques. Moreover, we established a database encompassing the available literature on this subject. At our lab, we have developed an cultured skin model in which we can simulate burn wound healing and inflammatory processes. We will use this model to test therapeutic interventions so that we can avoid using experimental animals.
