After more than 20 years at Peregrine Corporation, I joined Star Pharmacy Group as Chief Executive Officer, to lead a growth strategy to make it one of the leading pharmacy brands in the country. Star Pharmacy Group is the largest pharmacy brand headquartered in South Australia. I cannot think of a more profound purpose than helping others with their health. I'm incredibly proud of our dedicated teams who live and breathe our purpose of a Happier & Healthier Every Day for our customers.Prior to this, I enjoyed a fast-paced career (putting it mildly) at Peregrine Corporation, which was sold to VIVA Energy Australia, which we grew to become one of the largest private companies (top 10) in Australia. I was personally mentored by the Chairman who is one of the leading retail minds in the country.I’m proud of the OTR offer we developed which is internationally recognised for being best in class in convenience and making lives easy for our customers. I held a variety of roles there. In fact, I don’t think there is a role I didn’t do at one point or another. Notably I was Chief Operating Officer for many years, reporting direct to the Executive Chairman, leading nearly 4,000 team members across 250 businesses (retail, wholesale and franchising operations) with oversight of key corporate services functions which have included legal, management accounting, analytics, environmental management, planning, acquisitions, commercial, category management, human resources and marketing. My experience has made me become fluent in retail, operations, franchising, petrol and convenience, QSRs, logistics and food manufacturing. Also, I’ve had lots of M&A experience which has been an important part of our growth.I have learned many lessons so far. All work is important: there is no job too big or too small. Business is all about people. That is what makes it rewarding. Growth means more opportunities for anyone who wants to put their hand up. A sense of urgency in anything which impacts teams or customers is healthy. Spending time in stores is essential – that’s where the business happens. When stuff goes wrong, learn from it, and get the money back by putting what you learned into practice. Being customer-centric is more than words and a little more hands on than people think. Invest in a coach – you’d get one for tennis lessons, so why not business. Self-awareness is key.
