It shows multi-drug resistance and forms biofilms on indwelling medical devices such as urinary catheters, endotracheal tubes, joint prosthesis etc. Biofilms are a major challenge in medical science as they inhibit drug penetration and increase mortality in hospitalized patients. During my Fulbright-Nehru tenure, I used confocal laser scanning microscopy and peptide nucleic acid fluorescent in-situ hybridization to understand the architecture and drug resistance nature in Staphylococcal biofilms especially Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. -
