I investigated the role of Pparβ/δ in various cancers like skin, prostate, liver and lung. I used in vitro and in vivo models to elucidate the anti proliferative and anti inflammatory role of this nuclear receptor. The preliminary results showed that activating this nuclear receptor provides protective effects against in cancer. In a collaboration project with 3M Company, I investigated the mechanism of liver toxicity of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate). I used metabolomic analysis to identify the changes in the metabolite profile with PFOS treatment. In a collaboration project, with Dupont, I worked on the developmental toxicity of PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid). The results showed that PFOA did not produce developmental toxicity in mice with humanized Ppar-α receptor.

My project was on the chemopreventive effects of auraptene (a natural compound found in citrus fruits) against breast cancer. I demonstrated the chemopreventive effects of auraptene in the MNU-rat mammary cancer model and also in human breast cancer cell lines. Through HPLC analysis I estimated the concentration of auraptene in the rat mammary tissues after dietary administration. The cell cycle analysis followed by qRT-PCR array indicated that auraptene inhibits DNA synthesis and modulates cell cycle machinery. In a second project, I was part of the Breast Cancer Focus Group at LSUHSC-Shreveport and I analyzed human breast cancer tissues for cancer biomarkers. I compared the results from human and rat mammary tissues to identify the biomarkers modulated by my test compound, auraptene.
