Scheduling is a challenging intellectual function in many production systems, particularly project-oriented production systems and high-mix, low-volume production systems which are usually found in job shops with custom manufacturing. Scheduling of many concurrent projects / jobs with different due dates and process and resource requirements is tough mainly due to finite capacity of resources. Finite Capacity Scheduling (FCS) is a rigorous, scientific, data-intensive, software-based approach to scheduling such complex systems. It is very effective for scheduling project-oriented and high-mix, low-volume production systems with finite capacity resources. It was not widely adopted in industries in the past because of its cost, execution time, data requirements, cumbersome user interfaces and black box nature. Moreover, its pure deterministic logic did not convince many industry people. Powerful and low-cost computers, information systems, elegant user interfaces and shop floor data collection systems are bringing a revolutionary change in production management. FCS approach can now fully exploit these technological advances to simplify complex production scheduling for industries of any size. Our company Optisol develops powerful FCS software, Schedlyzer and supplies it to industries with project-oriented or high-mix, low-volume production. It modified FCS to address natural variation in production systems. The software leverages my 34 years of research and consulting experience in scheduling.
