Deputy Commissioner (Works) looks after all the engineering projects that the Greater Chennai Corporation implements. The responsibilities include ensuring that necessary estimates are prepared, sanctioned, tendered, awarded and executed. The job also involves liaising with various national and international funding agencies. Deputy Commissioner (Works), as the ex-officio Managing Director of Chennai Smart City Limited, is entrusted with substantial powers to manage the company's affairs under the company's memorandum and articles of association and to assist the board in selecting projects that are to be funded by the Smart Cities Mission. The major projects implemented are 1) the Rs. 3,220 crores ADB-funded Flood Hazard Mitigation Project in the Kosasthalaiyar basin, 2) the Rs1714 crores KfW-funded Flood Hazard Mitigation project in the Kovalam basin, 3) the 900 crore s JICA-funded Intelligent Transport System in Chennai project.
