I was responsible developing and managing partnerships with social enterprises in India, Philippines, Pakistan, Nepal, Malawi, Angola and Zimbabwe, my duties included:• Working with partners in different countries to develop sustainable social enterprise that delivered urban developments for the urban poor. This included developing financial and housing products and tools suitable for urban poor.• Developing various excel-based tools, for designing and modelling home-loan products, cross-subsidy, development projects, rent setting and management, risk modelling, project monitoring and reporting, project pipeline monitoring, portfolio development, and project and organisational cashflow design.• Working within a multi-disciplinary team, and also with external consultants to achieve organisational goals.• Conducting due diligence and appraisal of projects and programmes in areas including technical, financial, market-suitability, implementation, and operation.• Preparing appraisal reports of proposals, and inputs to submitted for approval to Reall’s investment committee.• Monitoring progress of approved project investments, and developing mitigation and rectification strategies to ensure projects met time, cost and deliverable targets• Working with partners in different countries to design strategies for organisational development, to ensure the longterm sustainability of the organisations.Achievements/highlights included:• Developed project financial modelling tool, to be used by Social Enterprises.• Developing project pipeline planning, monitoring and reporting tool• Developing portfolio management tools• Helping develop projects in over 7 countries, with total investment of over GBP 20m• Helping to innovate social rental housing in Malawi. • Helping to innovate cross-subsidy housing developments in Nepal and Philippines, • Supporting the growth of the organisations to achieve upscale in delivery

I was responsible for setting up and leading our urban communities unit (see www.homesinthecity.in), as well co-ordinating and designing other projects.My responsibilities included:• Developing overall vision, objectives, initiatives and budget of the program• Recruiting and managing my own team. Developing relationships with local, state, national and international stakeholders • Managing individual projects to ensure their success and alignment with wider program objectives.• Conducting community meetings and planning exercises, nurturing slum leadership, ensuring transparency and accountability.• Administrative duties: preparing and monitoring budgets, writing reports for funders, preparing proposals, reviewing submitted proposals and reports, preparing contracts and agreements. Organising workshops and trainings. Giving presentations to a variety of audiences, including international audiences. Achievements/highlights included:• Researched, designed and received funding for a number of urban development programs • Designing and overseeing the surveying of the cities slum population (over 12,000 households)• Working with City Municipality to strengthen decentralised planning and governance through initiating decentralised services and community management including drinking water , waste water treatment and solid waste management. • Setting up a Community facilitation centre to link the urban poor and the local government. • Working with private entrepreneurs to set-up services such as solid waste management and waste water treatment.• Working with slum communities and district government to develop slum upgradation programs• Working with partner NGO’s to set-up an urban poor women’s federation and to develop housing micro-finance products for slum dwellers Other activities included:• Co-ordination, research and writing of UNDP report on the mid-term status of village reconstruction in Tamil Nadu villages after the 2001 Tsunami

The Drawing Room is a small firm specializing in work in conservation areas. My work included:• Designing sensitive house-extensions and community centres• Preparing submission drawings for planning and regulation• Housing surveys and client meetings

As part of its rehabilitation efforts after the 2004 Tsunami, SIFFS was building 1500 homes in the fishermen villages. as an Indicorps fellow my activities included:• Participatory design of houses, and new settlement tsunami affected fishermen’s village• Preparing construction drawings and Site supervision• Investigating surface water drainage and the local canal network, rain-water harvesting, alternative sanitation products, and also the local vernacular architecture• Design of additional classroom-building for a local girls school.• Organising youth groups and co-ordinating with other NGO’s, employers, and government departments to set up careers guidance service for young adults

Burnell Briercliffe Architects are a small practice working in one of the poorest areas of Sheffield. Our clients tended to be community, education and charity groups wanting community facilities, and also private clients and housing associations wanting refurbishment and new build work.
