About Pratap Kumar

I am a clinician, neuroscientist, health economist, entrepreneur and health systems scientist working at the interface of technology and global public health. I am currently Associate Professor, Digital Health Policy, at the Global Business School for Health (GBSH) at UCL.I am the founder of Health-E-Net (www.health-e-net.org), a digital health social enterprise aiming to democratise the generation and use of health data. PaperEMR is the flagship product of the company that generates high-quality data from simple, familiar paper-based tools used widely for routine documentation. The company lowers the barriers for digital transformation using novel design and cutting-edge mobile technologies including computer vision and machine learning algorithms.I am a Senior Research Fellow at Strathmore University Business School where I have taught and led implementation research in health systems. This work is shaping how innovations can impact global public health. A current project focuses on how innovative solutions can increase the availability of safe blood transfusion across Kenya. My doctoral work in neuroscience has shed light on organisational principles of cortical networks. I have used electrophysiological (patch clamp recordings), anatomical, molecular and computational tools in doctoral and postdoctoral work in this field. This formative period, exposing me to the cutting edge of computational neuroscience, and a medical degree from India, allows me to link cutting-edge technologies with healthcare in some of the most challenging regions of the world.I have studied or worked in the following countries, moving westwards: Japan, India, Kenya, Switzerland, Germany, UK and the USA.

Listed skills include Neuroscience, Health Policy, Health Economics, Clinical Research, and 24 others.

I have raised over $6m in grant funding, both directly for the company and in partnership with non-profit and academic organisations, for the development and implementation of its technolgies. I have diversified its revenue streams to include contracts with regional governments, established private sector organisations and startups, local and international NGOs and the academia, providing the company with a strong foundation for growth. This is an award is under the BLOODSAFE (https://bloodsafe-research.org/) program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the NIH.The formative phase of the research combines a deep exploration of the Kenyan blood system through extensive interviews and focus group discussions, capture of detailed data on blood demand through the digitisation of tens of thousands of requests for blood transfusion across multiple hospitals, and detailed process mapping and simulation modeling of the entire blood transfusion system - from collection of blood in the community, to its processing in a centralised laboratory system, and finally the delivery and use of blood in hospital wards. Insights from this phase is leading to an implementation science study that aims to improve linkages between communities and healthcare facilities around blood transfusion. The study works closely with national and regional health administrators, health facility managers and various stakeholders who can benefit from insights from qualitative, quantitative and simulation data that the research is generating.
