Research Assistant - Cfd Modeling & SimulationLouisiana State University 2011 - 2017Baton Rouge, La, UsDissertation: “A Multi-Scale Approach for Modeling Shock Ignition and Burn of Granular HMX”• Research Objective: Development of a robust, flexible, and computationally inexpensive multi-phase continuum model to investigate shock wave propagation through granular energetic materials. The model can be used as a tool for mitigation of potential safety hazard. • Modeling Approach: Multiphase continuum model approach is adopted and the resulting model is comprised of a system of hyperbolic partial differential equations representing mass, momentum and energy balance laws in each phase. The system of equations is closed by constitutive relations, an evolutionary expression for volume fraction, algebraic interphase exchange terms, and a saturation constraint.• Numerical Technique: The foundation of the numerical scheme used in this work is a conservative, finite-volume, central scheme, that is total variation diminishing (TVD) which requires less information concerning the eigenstructure of the model equations.• Computational Analysis: Accurately predicted the mechanism of Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT) and Shock-to-Detonation Transition (SDT) in Granular HMX. Computationally examined meso-scale (particle scale) and macro-scale (bulk scale) dissipation by compaction shocks in low density granular HMX to determine the extent of agreement. Developed a multi-scale static coupling technique to use meso-scale information to develop macro-scale models. -
