Profile bio

About Prateek Jolly

I am a mechanical engineer with more than 7 years of experience in the field of computer aided structural analysis. At Camaco, we are a small team primarily using Abaqus and LS-Dyna to evaluate the functionality, performance and safety of automotive seat structures. I specialize in crashworthiness and non-linear static analysis of full automotive seats and associated mechanisms. I was previously employed as a crash analyst at the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aerial Systems Research at Mississippi State University. Our team was aiding the FAA in evaluating the risk of operating these drones made of composite materials, in the same shared airspace as manned commercial aircraft by conducting crash simulations and physical, component-level testing. In my spare time I design and test fly radio controlled aircraft.

Listed skills include Ansys, Matlab, Aerodynamics, Solidworks, and 40 others.

Cae Engineer

Current

Plymouth, Michigan, United States

• Provided CAE support using ABAQUS and LS-Dyna solvers in the product development of automotive sub-assemblies, batteries, medical devices and football helmets.• Instrumental to the CAE effort of a Tier-1 seat manufacturer to analyze seat integrity and occupant safety according to FMVSS (frontal and rear impact, 207/210, 225, luggage retention) regulations. Worked with the manufacturer over the course of 2 years on multiple iterations of the front and rear feet brackets, seat latch and seat lower cross-tube to meet ease of manufacturing and safety targets.• Our team responded to the field failure of a Tier-1 bumper assembly that was failing within 3 hours of a road test. Responsible for meshing, setting up and postprocessing modal and static test models with elastic-plastic and temperature-dependent material properties for further testing.• Worked in conjunction with the in-house design team to virtually certify a medical catheter to meet structural regulations. Conducted modal analysis, static push tests, wire pull test and adhesive evaluation of the full structure. Optimized the snap features of the cover assembly to meet insertion and release load targets.

Nov 2016 - Present

Post Graduate Researcher

Starkville, Mississippi

Simulated collisions between drones and commercial aircraft at the Federal Aviation Authority’s (FAA’s) Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Research at Mississippi State University. The team aided the FAA in evaluating the risk of operating these drones in the same shared airspace as manned commercial aircraft by conducting crash simulations and physical, component-level testing. Generated high detail FEA meshes (LS-Dyna, Altair Hypermesh, Hyperview) and CAD (NX-10, CATIA) models of a drone as well as a target for simulation based, air-to-air crash testing between a popular fixed wing UAS and a manned aircraft.Conducted material characterization and material model selection for foam, plastic, aluminum, steel, carbon fiber and fiber glass.

Mar 2016 - Aug 2016

Graduate Research Assistant

Starkville, Mississippi

Graduate research assistant at the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory.Developed a simple-to-implement, cost effective damage identification methodology to detect the presence of, locate and estimate the size of damage in composite structures. The methodology was validated using both experimental and analytical means. Conducted dynamic FEA studies to simulate wave propagation, and validate the damage triangulation methodology.Experimental studies involved the use of state of the art instruments and sensors such as laser vibrometers, tuned piezo electric transducers and optic fiber based Bragg grating strain sensors.Experiments proved that impact damage could be located to within half an inch using this methodology. Successfully trained graduate students to cut, layup, bag and cure carbon-epoxy prepregs.Volunteered to ascertain the aerodynamic performance and evaluate flight test data of a solar-powered, autonomous, unmanned aerial vehicle under development in the power systems laboratory at MSU.

Jul 2013 - Dec 2015

Project Engineer

Mumbai Area, India

Research on unmanned aerial vehicles(fixed wing and quadrotors) design, instrumentation, autopilots and manufacturing techniques.

Jul 2011 - Jul 2013

Intern

Bengaluru Area, India

Formulated a methodology and developed a corresponding MATLAB program to derive performance variables of a micro UAV considering aerodynamics and propulsion.Awarded with “The Most Innovative Final Undergraduate Project - 2011” for continuing this work to design, fabricate and test fly a small UAS.
