In order to work with all sizes of branchless banking and mobile money projects globally, I set up Accendo Associates, an advisory practice delivering digital financial services at scale for the unbanked in emerging markets. We provided quality advisory services to corporates, donors and governments that want to accelerate and deepen the penetration of digital financial services such as payments, savings, lending, insurance products. Accendo also supported the creation of proofs of concept that demonstrate technology can be used to increase economic activity in small businesses in emerging markets.Since the inception of Accendo, we worked on branchless banking projects for IFC, World Bank, USAID and others in China, Indonesia, India, Mozambique and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.

A new business focused on Mobile Money Agent Centric operations to foster the creation of Trust and Adoption of Branchless Banking by offering consistency of customer experience and simplification of services. We achieved this by building standardized technology, systems and processes that Banks, Operators and other Financial Institutions can use to engage with Agent Networks.Our first implementation was in Nigeria. Exited this business by selling to Interswitch Nigeria in January 2015. By use of innovative mobile money services, the Mozambique Ministry of Education wanted to build a model for the payment of teachers’ salaries through mobile phone, into their mobile money accounts. The Ministry of Education requested the Bank's assistance in piloting this model in 25 schools located in two districts. Once successful, the piloted model was rolled out to around 70 thousand teachers and many other public servants and rural workers. I had to recommend of a suitable mobile/electronic payment mechanism and pilot execution plan for payment of teachers’ salaries in remote districts based on necessary information gathering and diagnostics. This was followed by the approval of the payment mechanism, and successful testing and trial run. After successful implementation and a final report on implementation, impact, lessons learned from the pilot and recommendations for nationwide scale up were created.
