I’m CEO and Co-Founder of Tan Ward and have over 20 years working in media law. I’ve acted for household names, A-list talent, chief executives, recording artists, songwriters and creatives of all types navigate the complexities of IP and contracting in the arts & entertainment sector. As Co-Founder of Tan Ward, I’m passionate about creating a better path for lawyers – particularly women. I’ve built Tan Ward with an ethos based on autonomy and flexibility with each lawyer having absolute control over earnings and work-life balance. It’s the structure I craved as a lawyer in traditional practices, so we’ve designed everything to make it easier for other lawyers looking to make the leap. We’re expanding, and we would love to hear from lawyers looking for a fresh alternative to the partnership model. My background…I grew up in Malaysia then England. I’ve always felt like a bit of an outsider. Whilst conscious of it, I’ve never accepted that it should be a barrier. I think I’m a rather non-standard candidate for the law. Perhaps that is what makes me a good listener, why clients work with me and why I fight for what I believe is right. My legal career started out as a paralegal where my science degree made me a good fit for the IP department at Hogan Lovells before moving to smaller more specialist media law practices. I spent 13 years at Sheridans before moving to Collins Long, establishing a strong following initially in music, but also beyond. Each experience has allowed me to take the best practices from each firms and cherry pick what is best and works most efficiently for Tan Ward.Work:Life…At Tan Ward, our time is our own. It’s that autonomy and flexibility that is key. It allows me to be fully there for my clients when they need me, and also fully there for my children when they need me too. We’ve built a supportive environment, a developed network with excellent partnerships across the media sector and an established infrastructure to help nourish and nurture professional ambitions for ambitious lawyers. We are driven to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients, and we work tirelessly to help our clients achieve those goals.Outside of work, I love music, film, art. I’ll watch almost anything. I’ll never tire of the privilege of watching a live show, going to the theatre or an exhibition.
