I am a Veterinary Microbiologist currently employed with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as Principal Scientist. I have approximately 30 years of experience in research and management and hold the additional charge of Chief Executive Officer at Agrinnovate India Limited, a Government of India enterprise focused on licensing agricultural technologies developed by ICAR to the industry.My career highlights include initiating a first-of-its-kind project to map animal diseases in free-ranging wildlife at the wild-domestic interface while working at the Wildlife Institute of India. I was also involved in the conceptualization of the Indian Wildlife Health Cooperative, in collaboration with USFWS. From 2010 to 2015, I served as In-charge of the National Centre for Veterinary Type Culture, where I coordinated a network program involving 18 labs to build a robust repository of veterinary, dairy, and rumen microbes. In 2015, I transitioned to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) as Director of the National Institute of Animal Health, overseeing the quality testing and licensing of veterinary biologicals in India.In January 2020, I was appointed as Animal Husbandry Commissioner (the Chief Veterinary Officer of India). In this role, I was involved in policy formulation on animal health and played a key role in planning and implementing the world’s largest livestock immunization campaigns against FMD, Brucellosis, PPR, and CSF. I also successfully managed the epidemics of LSD and ASF in India. I led the development of National Action Plans (NAPs) on AMR, Rabies Elimination, AI, and ASF, among others, and established the ‘One Health Support Unit’ at DAHD with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.I have also developed a World Bank project to strengthen animal health systems for effective implementation of One Health. I conceptualized a plan for Animal Pandemic Preparedness and initiated several activities towards its implementation in coordination with the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, GOI. I have been nominated as Chair/Expert Member in various Committees with DAHD, WOAH (OIE), FAO, WHO, and PSA, and have contributed to the One Health Action Group and the high-risk pathogen lab network under the National One Health Mission in India.
