As the Biology Prefect in Sixth Form, I lead my team towards creating an activity-based week of Biology fun! Initially we had to brainstorm activity ideas, pass them onto the staff for assessing feasibility during our scheduled meetings and then apply budgeting to see if it was overall affordable. This experience made me realise that a lot of thought and consideration is required behind every event planning and how it requires different fields of expertise coming together to work harmoniously. Individually, I was responsible for advertising the activities that were taking place during Biology week. My role in the team was to clearly communicate with the school and give all the details. I executed this through various forms of communication (posters, email, assembly notices etc) to ensure everyone obtained all the necessary information prior the events. I was organised with sending out information and collating necessary data to ensure the activities chosen fits the majority’s wish. I will use these skills of independence when I have my own tasks to complete and use good organisation to ensure every aspect in my work is accomplished well in advance for a smooth working environment. I helped arrange and execute an assembly along with my peers. When we planned for it, I had to think strategically as a leader about how everyone could contribute towards a well-rounded presentation. I had to selectively research about the wonders of Biology and decide the execution according to the year group (younger years had videos and elder years had factual talks). I had responsibility to ensure the school took away interesting information about Biology and participated as much as possible, I achieved this through my various forms of advertisements and captivating assemblies. In Year 12, I mentored a student for GCSE Chemistry and Biology, and this helped me to further my learning, reflecting, and developing teaching skills. I helped her believe in her ability and tried to support her. I found I could be an active learner whilst being a communicative teacher.I had to pay close attention to detail of my mentee’s progress constantly and analyse her progress in our sessions and in her monthly tests. I helped her believe in her ability and tried to support her. I found I could be an active learner whilst being a communicative teacher.I had to pay close attention to detail of my mentee’s progress constantly and analyse her progress in our sessions and in her monthly tests. Science was not her favourite which ultimately caused her to lose confidence in herself and drop in progress. Therefore, I helped her recognise her strengths to help her overcome her weaknesses which helped motivate her. Knowing that I could get around my struggles using different methods like drawing flow charts, I helped her do the same. I explained difficult theory using visual aids like diagrams, which would be easier to remember in the exam. My main source of encouragement when I studied Biology or Chemistry was mentoring her, because teaching also made me feel more confident. I learnt people have strengths and weaknesses, so highlighting these strengths and using them to overcome your weaknesses is true brilliance. After GCSEs she received an 8 and 7 which I am proud of, always knowing that she had the talent from the beginning. These skills are extremely relevant for this role. I have experience with monitoring progress of a student so I will be able to monitor the progress of vulnerable students by ensuring I actively communicate with them and building a trusting open relationship. I admire that each student has amazing qualities that need to be expressed, and I want to use my energy and drive to help them resurface their talents to place them in a strong position to strive forward and not give up. Volunteering in the dementia ward enabled me to practise clear communication skills which are essential everywhere, especially for this role, as active communication with students is key to understanding their progress, their feelings, and their thoughts for moving forward. As a supporter I will always communicate with sensitivity and help all the students reach their individual goals and ultimately unlock their maximum potential. I had the patience to listen to the residents; I empathised with them and reminded them of the positives. These experiences helped me value my role as a listener and supporter. When the residents feel disheartened and lonely, I have adapted my response to sympathise and reassure them and respect them when they require space. I can apply these skills for my job as a learning support assistant. I understand that learning is not a simple straight-line graph. There will inevitably be times when students face difficulties and struggles which can lead to frustration, a loss of confidence and a feeling of shame or giving up. I went through these stages constantly as a cycle so I know I am always ready to help and be their source of energy to help motivate them use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses to fulfil their true intelligence.
