My work in the lab of Dr. Hannes Roest focused on combining computational and experimental advances that promote the unique identification of metabolites and lipids in complex samples. First, I quantitatively investigated the conditions necessary for unique metabolite detection in complex backgrounds by comparing traditional LC-MS methods in metabolomics. Next, I led the development of two novel methods for lipidomics (DDA and DIA) using fragment ion information (MS2) and ion mobility separation on the timsTOF Pro. As unambiguous identification is an essential requirement in many biological studies, these advancements have the potential to be applied to a wide array of research, furthering the understanding of functional interactions in complex metabolic consortiaDuring this time, I spearheaded an interdepartmental workshop (funded by a three-year University of Toronto Graduate Student Wellness Grant) with a team of six graduate students, resulting in a community built to support each other’s mental health, while also leading the associated blog.

In this work, I investigated methods of hyperactivating the Pseudomonas protegens type VI secretion system (T6SS). I utilized bioinformatics tools to analyze P. protegens genome and support effector discovery based on the presence of T6-associated sequence motifs. I produced, interpreted, and analyzed quantitative and qualitative results obtained by conducting interbacterial competition experiments measuring the fitness advantage of P. protegens in co-culture
