About a year ago, I obtained a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from the University of South Carolina. My research is interdisciplinary and focuses on the issues of teaching and learning English as a second language. I have a specific interest in academic writing and the use of multimodal digital literacies, and my goal is to provide professional development for teachers across academic areas so that they can meet the needs of their multilingual learners.I am a versatile teacher of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) and of academic English composition with a transdisciplinary perspective and experience in various educational settings in Brazil and in the United States. I am interested in cultural diversity and intercultural understanding. I believe in life-long learning and in the constant development of newer or stronger skills. In light of fast-paced technological advancements, I seek to incorporate instructional technologies to enhance my students’ academic performance in English literacy. I enjoy designing instructional materials, trying new methodologies, collaborating with colleagues, and being part of a professional community. My relevant knowledge includes language teaching and learning, instructional technologies, multimodal literacies, multicultural awareness, and second language writing for academic purposes.In my previous career, I received a bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of São Paulo - Brazil, a graduate certificate in Audiology, and a specialization in Voice Disorders. Although I have not worked in that field since 2007, the knowledge I gained as a speech pathologist continues to inform my understanding of language and literacy acquisition and development. After shifting my professional focus to education, I obtained international certificates such as the ICELT (offered internationally by the University of Cambridge - UK), and further degrees such as a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and a master’s degree in English for Specific Purposes, both from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte - USA.My professional goals are to expand my research and continue meeting the needs of English language learners through teacher education. I currently hold a full time position as a Multilingual Learners Specialist at the Richland School District Two in Columbia, SC, and a part time adjunct position as a course instructor for the Department of English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC.
