As a current college student receiving my bachelors in psychology, I am already beating the odds. Though it may seem like an accomplishment that many people take for granted, I do not. During my childhood, many doctor's believed I would not make it or if I did, I would have severe mental disabilities. I was born three months prematurely and suffered greatly but learned how to overcome the hardships to reach my goals. Having a difficult past gives me the ability to have compassion and give hope to patients that I see myself helping. Learning how to walk without braces, speak correctly and test out of my remedial classes after getting held back was no easy task. The determination, hard work and ability to see past the prognosis is exactly what led me to one day become an occupational therapist. Speaking at the charity event of 1,000 people for St. Joseph's Hospital taught me that my voice mattered and that it can make a difference. I hope to do that for the rest of my life by helping other's realize that they can rise above too.
