I like to think of myself as a full stack data shepherd. When faced with a business problem, I think creatively about the approach, available data, and potential data generation. This starts an iterative research loop combining business knowledge with existing data and my own domain expertise in spatial data, water resources, urban infrastructure, ecology, and government institutions. I’m often heavily involved in the data ETL process and relational table design, obtaining, loading, cleaning, and feature engineering. I design and implement the data processing and analysis. My tools are python, SQL, and spatial software, and ultimately I’m my own end user, delivering analysis and visualizations to tell the story and deliver data insights back to the business. I hold many hands through this process, including business experts, IT, and other data scientists and engineers more knowledgeable than myself. Because of my background, I get to work with the most exciting assets including skyscrapers, railroads, satellites, and energy facilities and match them against perils like hurricanes and explosions.
