I was responsible for editing all of the verbal content of the country's first online encyclopedia created specifically for the Internet. The encyclopedia currently offers more than 6,000 essays written by journalists, scholars, staff historians, and others. I served as Senior Editor from 1998 to 2013, and now (2013-) serve as Founding and Consulting Editor.

I teach very craft-oriented seminars on creative writing to adult writers. I teach independently and also at Richard Hugo House, The Taos Summer Writer's Conference (2008-2016), Field's End, The Writer's Workshoppe in Port Townsend, Centrum, and elsewhere.

I am a Seattle-based author and teacher of writing. My books include Fire and Stone: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (Univ of GA Press); Minding the Muse: A Handbook for Painters, Composers, Writers, and Other Creators (Coffeetown); Crossing Over: Poems (Universityty of New Mexico Press). My other books are The Writer's Portable Mentor: A Guide to Art, Craft, and the Writing Life and Where the Sun Never Shines: A History of America's Bloody Coal Industry. My shorter works include science, poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction, and my column, Science Frictions, appeared on the website of The American Scholar for 92 weeks (2011-2013).My work has appeared in The Tampa Review, Smithsonian, The Gettysburg Review, The Chariton Review, Women's Review of Books, Cold Mountain Review, Post Road, Raven Chronicles, The Cincinnati Review, The Southern Review, The Sow's Ear Poetry Review, New Orphic Review, Web Conjunctions, Alaska Quarterly Review, Stringtown, Fourth Genre, Passages North, Bosque, and elsewhere. My awards include a National Magazine Award, and I've been a fellow at Hedgebrook, the Millay Colony for the Arts, and Jack Straw Productions. My MFA is from the University of Washington. I serve as Founding and Consulting Editor of www.historylink.org, the online encyclopedia of Washington state history.
