Adrift Between Cornwall and KenyaWhen David Penrose cast off his ketch and headed out to sea, he was fully aware of the approaching storm. But he had made up his mind to flee family life in favour of a return to his former love, the beautiful Abuya in Kenya. It was a decision that was to have unforeseen consequences. This family saga links the lives of five women in a story spanning three generations and two continents – with the free-spirited David a mysterious presence from start to finish. It begins in Cornwall with the Penrose family’s tragic loss of a first-born son, soon followed by the birth of Jane, and the story of her early years. During the summer of 1985 Jane falls for, and quickly marries, David, a happy-go-lucky adventurer. She easily settles into her life of motherhood, picking up the routines of her own sheltered childhood. David, however, finds it increasingly difficult to adapt to living and working under the same roof as his in-laws. When he later disappears, and the wreckage of his boat is washed ashore, he is believed to have drowned. In interwoven chapters, we learn how the Penrose family live in the ‘60s and ‘70s and how, in stark contrast, Abuya grew up motherless and with an absent father in Western Kenya. We also learn of David’s early years in Leeds and his adventures as a young backpacker, of how he first met Abuya in Mombasa, and of their brief, but special, time together. 15 years later, Moira, an idealistic young girl volunteering in Kenya who turns out to be an unsuspecting friend of David’s younger daughter, finally leads to a coincidence that brings to mind the immortal line from the film “Casablanca”: ‘Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine!’
