Pritha Renganathan Email and Phone Number
Skilled researcher/experimentalist in shock wave studies focusing on material response under extreme conditions. PhD graduate in mechanical engineering working alongside material science and physics (wave propagation in solids). Hard worker with “never give up” attitude towards difficult problems. Extremely reliable, strong and highly motivated mechanical engineer with good work ethics (organized and good time management), and detail oriented. My PhD work was focused on the following:• Examination of inelastic deformation mechanisms in hcp magnesium (Mg) single crystals under planar shock wave loading along specific and non-specific direction. • Designed and performed plate impact experiments using light gas guns which involved various sample preparation techniques such as machining, lapping, polishing, vapor deposition, bonding, etching etc., and sample characterization by sound speed, density, optical and XRD measurements.• Measured wave profiles (particle velocity histories) in the shocked and released sample using a laser interferometry technique (VISAR) which required functional understanding of optical and electronic equipment. • Analyzed measured wave profiles using a 1D wave propagation code (COPS) to determine the operative slip and/or twin systems and obtain a mechanistic understanding of the governing deformation mechanisms.I would like to see myself as a researcher in shock wave studies (material response under impact loading) in places where I can utilize my skills and gain further experience with new measuring tools and help provide new solutions to our day to day problems. Most importantly, I would like to be challenged on an intellectual level and figuring out answers to difficult scientific problems.
