As my first step towards my goal of becoming a youth counsellor, I joined Big Heart Student Care as an Ad-hoc assistant student care officer. Through this job opportunity, I was able to work and interact with primary school children. My role consisted of implementing value based activities, supervising and guiding homework and ensuring the overall being of my students. I also took it upon myself to conduct engaging and educational games with my class during their free time so that they used their time productively by learning new words, practicing their numeracy skills or just socialising with peers in their class. Additionally, since I was an ad-hoc part-timer, I was deployed to various schools during my time with Big Heart. This allowed me to work on my adaptability skills as I had to quickly adjust to each centre's different way of functioning. I was also able to learn effective ways to communicate with and reach out to these older children from teachers who had more experience. I truly appreciated all the opportunities given to me to learn and improve myself as a teacher and I was sure to apply what I learnt from the teachers with my students in other schools. Show less

I was assigned to the K2 class ( 5 to 6 years old) and tasked to plan and implement 10 lessons, create a take home activity and design teaching aids as well as learning centre materials. I also assisted with classroom management, routine care, lessons and small group activities. A month into my internship, I had to work from home because of the pandemic. As such, I was more involved in the planning processes instead of the implementation. Nonetheless, I was able to learn how to plan differentiated learning experiences by scaling up / down an activity or lesson to match a child’s learning pace and style. This new knowledge was highly beneficial to me as it linked to my teaching philosophy. I also learnt how to integrate children's physical environment into their learning to make it more meaningful. Although I did not get to implement as many lessons as I hoped for, I still had some opportunities to do so which helped me improve my teaching, facilitating and questioning abilities. Additionally, seeing pictures of children enjoying the lessons and activities I planned but could not implement made me feel like I was becoming a better educator. This internship was a unique experience that was so enriching for me as I discovered my passion to be an educator after being fully involved in the whole process of planning, teaching and seeing children’s growth. My role as an activity crew includes facilitating sports related activities manning activity stations, handling transaction and interacting with guests of all ages. I also check and clean my designated activity areas so that it is safe and presentable for public use. As a result, I have been able to strengthen my communication, conflict resolution and teamwork skills. A challenge I faced here would be handling transactions. Shortchanging a guest was my biggest fear when I was assigned to be receptionist for the first time. I watched and learnt from senior staff during transactions so that I knew how to troubleshoot any problems that may arise. This helped me ensure that transactions were a smooth experience for my guests and myself. Show less

I also assisted my host teacher in routine care, classroom management and admin workThis practicum served as a learning experience as it was my first time implementing lessons to a real group of children and my first time having a lecturer observe and assess me on my lessons. I was evidently nervous during my first implementation of the music lesson as I did not know what to expect. Putting to use classroom management techniques and child development knowledge, I was able to implement the lesson smoothly and meet all my lesson objectives. However, I was aware that I had room for improvement so I gained feedback from my host teacher and lecturer. This enabled me to use their feedback to my advantage in the following 2 lessons and recently in my internship. Through the feedback sessions, I learnt more effective ways of managing a class and redirecting attention. What I enjoyed the most during this practicum was my interactions with the children. I spent a lot of time with different classes, getting to know each child during shower or meal time. It is these moments that I get to see children to be their truest self, which pushes me to work hard in becoming an educator/counsellor. Show less

Through these role playing activities, children were able to find out more about the various occupations available in Singapore and their roles and responsibilities through hands-on learning. As I was new to such roleplaying activities, I faced some difficulties in acting out the roles in an engaging manner. To help me improve myself, I was paired with senior staff who gave me roleplaying tips and tricks and provided me with many opportunities to roleplay with children. I also learnt various techniques to keep the children engaged, like quizzing them about what they needed to do or playing a little game before we started our activity. Eventually, I became comfortable with acting out scenarios as animated as I could be so that the children enjoyed the activity. Learning how to roleplay and keep children engaged have turned out to be useful for me as an educator. Additionally, I also picked up conflict resolution skills when I had to handle complains from guests or difficult situations. I gained confidence in being able to solve problems without the help of our team leaders. Although Kidzania has closed down due to the pandemic, I will always remember pleasant working experience and learning points I gained from being a Zupervisor and for being a stepping stone to my journey of being an early childhood educator. My host teacher was very helpful and guided me through my observations and applications of knowledge. I enjoyed the short period of time at Learning Vision as it gave me an insight to the roles and responsibilities of an educator and allowed me to practice learnt skills.
