I work as Senior Lecturer in English Language at the Open University UK. I design and develop English language across the discipline courses (business, early childhood studies, science) and materials for open and distance learners. I also produce teacher professional development materials for English language teachers who teach English as an additional language. All of these materials are technology-mediated (e.g., mobile phones). I teach both undergraduates and postgraduates including doctoral supervision. I have worked in international development projects, the most notable being English in Action in Bangladesh and Teacher Education through School-based Support India (TESS-India) in India. I have led or co-led a number of research projects. They are related to English language in general. Particularly, my projects have focused on academic literacy, English for specific purposes, academic writing, language assessment and educational technologies. I have completed externally funded projects on language testing (English language assessment in schools in Bangladesh - UKAID; IELTS, Aptis - British Council and TOEFL - ETS), English medium education (British Council) and status of English language in school education in Nepal (British Council). Currently, I am leading on a research project examining transitivity and meta discourse markers in spoken Aptis tests (British Council). I have authored or co-authored over 50 research outputs including books, book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles.My main research interests include academic writing, dynamic assessment, language assessment, English language teacher education in developing countries, mobile technology and English medium education. I use sociocultural theory and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as my principal theories along other critical theories.
