Priya Jeram Patel is a filmmaker and entrepreneur from Cape Town, South Africa. She started her career studying Screen Production at the University of Cape Town which she later graduated from with distinction in 2019. During her time at the University of Cape Town she was able to hone her skills in many different areas which culminated in her collaborative filmmaking style. She directed two documentary short films, ‘Anthem’ and ‘Queer’ which were both nominated at the 14th Annual South African Film and Television Awards and the 2019 Shnit International Film Festival respectively.Priya's interest lies in the space where thought provoking documentary meets visual storytelling. Her filmmaking centres on providing a means for marginalised bodies to create and collaborate together. With a focus on South African Heritage and LGBTQIA+ narratives, Priya aims to be contributing to the culmination of South African marginalised communities voice and spirit on and off screen. Priya has gained experience working with production companies such as Azania Rising Productions, Tuba Films, Afrika Kuinuka Productions, Flair Productions and the Centre for Film and Media Studies. With this experience she embarked on a new journey in late 2021 to create her own production company, 400 Seats, which she currently operates under.Priya is also a Co-founder and Creative Director at YOLK, an Online fashion hub and curatorship. YOLK works with local creatives working towards sustainable communal growth within a challenging local fashion market. YOLK’s goal is to create a purpose-driven community of local musicians, artists, fashion brands, talent and filmmakers. Through this Priya is able to create community and let the experimental side of her filmmaking practice shine.
