Peter Lewis holds a Canada Research Chair in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, at Ontario Tech University. He is also Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology.Peter’s research advances both foundational and applied aspects of trustworthy, reflective, and socially intelligent systems. His work draws on extensive experience applying AI commercially (particularly with SMEs), as well as an academic background in nature-inspired, socially-sensitive, and self-aware intelligent systems. He is interested in where AI meets society, and how to help that relationship work well. His research is concerned with how to conceive of and build AI systems that meet this challenge. He co-edited the foundational book, Self-Aware Computing Systems, published by Springer, and is Associate Editor of IEEE Technology & Society Magazine. He has published over 75 papers in academic journals and conference proceedings, and led teams that have worked with numerous companies in the areas of artificial intelligence, data science, and software development.Formerly, he was Director of Think Beyond Data, an economic development program that generated over £4m for the regional economy, and co-founder of Beautiful Canoe, a software house and social enterprise. He was a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer at Aston University, UK, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK. He has a PhD in Computer Science and MSc in Natural Computation, also from Birmingham, and a began his academic journey with a BSc Computer Science from the University of Leicester.

Co-FounderBeautiful Canoe Apr 2016 - Jun 2021Birmingham, United KingdomBeautiful Canoe develops the technology leaders of the future. As Aston University's student-run software development company, we craft bespoke software according to our clients' needs, while developing the people who do it.We employ students on summer internships, year-long work placements and in part-time positions that complement their studies. Our impact is twofold: clients benefit from a custom and personalised software development service, while students gain valuable skills and experience in client-facing software development, leading to greater employability and ability to secure work placements. In addition to the practical experience of working on a project with a real client, our interns receive hands-on training, mentoring and coaching in agile team software development, that complement the more formal side of their education. Our clients include large public and private sector organisations, as well as smaller innovators without their own in-house technology capability. -

Research FellowUniversity Of Birmingham Sep 2010 - Sep 2013Birmingham, United KingdomI was a Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications (CERCIA) in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham.I worked on the EU funded research project "Engineering Proprioception in Computing Systems" (EPiCS), a four year project involving partners from Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the UK. The particular focus of the Birmingham team was on developing concepts and foundations for self-awareness and self-expression in decentralised computing systems consisting of autonomous agents. In order to achieve this, we drew on expertise in online learning algorithms and biological, social and economic inspired techniques. -
Doctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Birmingham Nov 2006 - Sep 2010Birmingham, United KingdomMy PhD dissertation, "Evolutionary Market-Based Resource Allocation in Decentralised Computational Systems", contributed to the field of market-based control of complex computational systems. I proposed and analysed a novel agent-based technique for the management of decentralised service-based computing systems. The approach, based on the theory of posted-offer markets from economics, complemented existing market-based techniques, by offering a simpler approach to decentralised resource allocation in networks under certain assumptions. My PhD was carried out at CERCIA (the Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications), at the University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Professor Xin Yao and Dr. Paul Marrow at BT.The core idea from my PhD was filed as a patent by BT across the world in 2008. I published results from my PhD in the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems (AAMAS), an article for which I won runner-up in the BT Gordon Radley "Best Author of Innovation" award in 2010. Additionally, I published results at prestigious international conferences such as Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN).After examination, I was awarded my PhD outright, with no thesis modifications required. This was the first case of this in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham for over a decade. -

A key success was writing a successful bid to the Countryside Agency for for funds to conduct a research project into transport choices and health. I subsequently managed the project, reporting to senior management on progress. I also took six residential training courses on topics including project management, leadership, analytical skills and government relations. -
