Our impact is twofold: clients benefit from a custom and personalised software development service, while students gain valuable skills and experience in client-facing software development, leading to greater employability and ability to secure work placements. In addition to the practical experience of working on a project with a real client, our interns receive hands-on training, mentoring and coaching in agile team software development, that complement the more formal side of their education. Our clients include large public and private sector organisations, as well as smaller innovators without their own in-house technology capability.

I was a Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications (CERCIA) in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham.I worked on the EU funded research project "Engineering Proprioception in Computing Systems" (EPiCS), a four year project involving partners from Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the UK. The particular focus of the Birmingham team was on developing concepts and foundations for self-awareness and self-expression in decentralised computing systems consisting of autonomous agents. In order to achieve this, we drew on expertise in online learning algorithms and biological, social and economic inspired techniques.
  • University Of Birmingham
    Doctoral Researcher
University Of Birmingham Nov 2006 - Sep 2010
    Birmingham, United Kingdom
My PhD dissertation, "Evolutionary Market-Based Resource Allocation in Decentralised Computational Systems", contributed to the field of market-based control of complex computational systems. I proposed and analysed a novel agent-based technique for the management of decentralised service-based computing systems. The approach, based on the theory of posted-offer markets from economics, complemented existing market-based techniques, by offering a simpler approach to decentralised resource allocation in networks under certain assumptions. My PhD was carried out at CERCIA (the Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications), at the University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Professor Xin Yao and Dr. Paul Marrow at BT.The core idea from my PhD was filed as a patent by BT across the world in 2008. I published results from my PhD in the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems (AAMAS), an article for which I won runner-up in the BT Gordon Radley "Best Author of Innovation" award in 2010. Additionally, I published results at prestigious international conferences such as Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN).After examination, I was awarded my PhD outright, with no thesis modifications required. This was the first case of this in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham for over a decade.
