ONH is a community-based 501 (c)(3) non-profit that provides wrap-around services to Belmont Cragin (BC) and the surrounding area, including a Food Pantry, Early Childhood and School Age Education, Special Education, Adult Education, an Illinois Welcoming Center for Immigrants and Refugees, and a co-located Healthcare Clinic run by CommunityHealth. BC is the neighborhood with the largest Hispanic/Latine population in Chicago, and ONH serves as an anchor point for this community to fulfill basic needs and provide opportunities for stability and growth.Since our founding over 130 years ago in Chicago’s West Town Neighborhood, ONH has been a steadfast community resource. Its early days saw the organization bringing the community together. Thousands of struggling immigrants looked to us for refuge and guidance by way of our school and community center. ONH gave them access to vital social services as they assimilated into daily life in Chicago, their new home. In the early 20th Century and during the Great Depression, the neighborhood’s disadvantaged people required shelter, food, and clothing, and ONH responded to become a life-saving resource for many in need. Today, the community’s most serious necessities are adult education and affordable childcare.
