Estimating irradiation dose for CT examinations performed with the Mars spectral Photon-counting scanner.

Redlen Technologies has developed a CZT photon-counting detectors for industry testing, airport security and medical imaging. The use of this detector requires new calibration protocols to ensure spectral accuracy and resolution. Once calibrated, the detector provides a 6 energy-resolve bins measurement enabling the improving of current X-ray imaging and the emergence of new applications. My work is to contribute to the calibration and the investigation of PCD image formation.

Following my experience in spectral CT reconstruction, I worked with clinicians to develop medical protocols and clinical applications to exploit the new capabilities of photon counting spectral CT imaging. As the new Philips SPCCT prototype has a large field of view enabling the scanning of human patients, a large amount of potential applications have emerged. This represent a very exciting moment in the emergence of this technology. My position requires to communicate with professionals with different background: clinicians, medical physicists, engineers, researchers... Contacts are not limited to the hospital but also with different European universities and companies. The aim is to publish original studies and to prove how photon count CT could improve clinical diagnosis routine.

This position was part of a European project called SPCCT (In Vivo Spectral Photon Counting CTMolecular Imaging in Cardio- and Neuro-Vascular Diseases). This project aims to develop futurespectral CT. Philips Healthcare Research are invested in it and their last spectral photon-countingCT prototype has just been settled in Lyon. I work on the software part and more precisely on thespectral reconstruction. As in my PhD, we want to develop One-Step approach to reconstructdirectly the basis material map images from photon count in several bins (5 for the Philipsprototype). A previous work of mine was to compare One-step reconstruction existing in the stateof the art (Mory and al., 2018). The fastest reconstruction has been implemented in C++implementation in the framework RTK (http://www.openrtk.org/ ). Currently, my work is to treatdata incoming from the Philips prototype in order to apply our reconstruction and to deal withremaining bugs of the implementation. The application of such reconstruction methods on real data coming from photon-counting detectors is very challenging. I have also investigated the use of a pile-up model andoptimization of the method (computation time, regularization parameters, etc.).

Phd Thesis: "Statistical reconstruction for spectral CT using Photon Counting Detector"Graduation date: October 2018.Recent developments in energy-discriminating Photon-Counting Detector (PCD) enable new horizons for spectral CT. With PCDs, new reconstruction methods take advantage of the spectral information measured through energy measurement bins. However PCDs have serious spectral distortion issues due to charge-sharing, fluorescence escape, pileup effect… Spectral CT with PCDs can be decomposed into two problems: a noisy geometric inversion problem (as in standard CT) and an additional PCD spectral degradation problem. The aim of the present study is to introduce a reconstruction method which solves both problems simultaneously: a " one-step " approach. An explicit linear detector model is used and characterized by a Detector Response Matrix (DRM). The algorithm reconstructs two basis material maps from energy-window transmission data. The results prove that the simultaneous inversion of both problems is well performed for simulation data. For comparison, we also perform a standard " two-step " approach: an advanced polynomial decomposition of measured sinograms combined with a filtered-back projection reconstruction. The results demonstrate the potential uses of this method for medical imaging or for non-destructive control in industry.

Master Thesis:Statistical study of population with and without surgical complication after Hip arthroplasty. Both populations were compared with the EOS Imaging System©. The study showed a global diagnosis has to be studied and especially global sagittal balance for explaining surgical complication. My contribution was the statistical analysis and the proposition of new criteria to evaluate sagittal balance. The work has been published by medical doctors: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.arth.2015.12.036.My contribution was the statistical analysis and proposition of new criteria to evaluate sagittal balance.
