I am Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean at UoG and was previously the Head of School of Psychology at the University of Surrey and the Director of the Institute for Research in Child Development at UEL. I was state-school educated and now hold a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, an MSc in Behavioural Statistics (IOP, Kings) and a PhD in Developmental Psychopathology (UCL). I am an effective, adaptive leader, who has a strong moral compass, a clarity of vision, and am an engaging communicator. I promote diversity, equity, and social justice as executive lead for widening participation, and Aurora champion. I have built my leadership career in higher education through the management of complex change, working with diverse stakeholders to improve reputation and financial sustainability, diversifying provision, and changing organisational structures. I have delivered 40% increases in income and excellent outcomes in REF (4*), KEF (top quintile) and TEF (GOLD) and taken staff with me on the journey.I have over 30 years' experience working with government, third sector, healthcare, regulatory, and educational bodies, bringing innovative thinking to learning, research and practice, that actively goes beyond narrow, discipline-specific silos to embrace interdisciplinary teaching and research and the delivery of the UN sustainable development goals. I have created new interdisciplinary research institutes, laboratories and teaching facilities.My expertise is in causal modelling of atypical outcomes from infancy to adolescence and I have managed many collaborative projects funded by prestigous bodies from the UK, Europe and the US. I have published >80 papers in top tier journals on social and cognitive development in children with autism, Down syndrome, preterm children, those exposed to socioeconomic disadvantage, drugs in utero, and those who excel in music. I have given invited talks all over the world and my work is highly cited and has had impact on policy and practice. I have strong connections nationally, and internationally and have developed strategic partnerships across stakeholder groups. I have undertaken evaluations for local authorities and businesses and am currently a trustee of Leigh Academy trust. Previously I was on the research board of children’s charity Place2Be, and on Newham Hospital trust research committee. I was a committee member of the Association of Heads of Psychology and have been advisor to National Children’s Bureau, Wave Trust and a member of the influential First 1001 days, UK All Party Parliamentary Group.
