Based at the flagship Leeds Humanities Research Institute as part of the Arts Engaged project, I pursue independent research into two main areas in the history of medicine.Firstly, I am examining the role of chemical disinfection in household cleaning practices in Britain. Looking at the period from c.1850-1950, I chart the impact of germ theories of disease on everyday hygiene, interrogating the ways in which chemical disinfectants became ubiquitous products.Secondly, I am interested in how the development of Leeds' water supply during the nineteenth century impacted on the surrounding rural environment. In particular, I look at how the responses of various interested stakeholders - public health officials, medical practitioners, local politicians, engineers, and residents - negotiated the extent and format of the city's water supply network, and the effect which this had on the surrounding landscape.My work for Arts Engaged at the University of Leeds involves aiding and encouraging collaboration between academics across the Faculty of Arts and museums and galleries. This is realised through supporting grant applications, establishing contacts in prospective and ongoing non-HEI partners, and fostering a collaborative approach to high-quality research.

Collaborative, public-facing research activity with the Thackray Medical Museum. Compiling object biographies of medical collections, especially those related to patenting and intellectual property.

I mark GCSE examination papers for the history of medicine optional module, working alongside senior examiners as an expert assessor of both examination scripts and course content.
