Patients are people with unique needs and complexities. Navigating the challenges that come with disease is never easy, and that’s why my approach to patient care is grounded in empathy. A radiation oncologist, breast cancer and lymphoedema specialist, and author, I am unrelenting in my drive to help others. Interested in complex breast cancer presentations and survivorship, including lymphoedema, breast conservation, DCIS, and the related emerging science, technology and treatments, I have built on 35 years of experience to ensure a personalised approach. Every patient is different, and no one-size fits all. Although based in Sydney at Icon Cancer Centres in Wahroonga and the Central Coast I lend my expertise to other clinics around Australia.I have accumulated a lot of knowledge about breast cancer and lymphoedema, which I openly share with my patients. This empowers them to make informed decisions and promotes the de-escalation of treatment to enhance their quality of life. After my medical training at the University of Sydney, I undertook specialist training at Westmead Hospital. I held a fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard University. I was then fortunate to be the founding director of the Western Breast Screening Unit and the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute.More recently, I was director of the cancer program at Macquarie University, where I established the now internationally recognised Australian Lymphoedema Education Research and Treatment (ALERT) program.I enjoy adding to my knowledge and extensive experience, which sees me help and advise on complex cases across the country. Always curious, I craft customised solutions that leverage cutting-edge treatments like accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) and 5-fraction radiation to the whole breast. I treat my patients as equals, ensuring they feel heard and understood. I also have lived experience of cancer, allowing for genuine empathy. I am tireless in my mission to help people beyond my clinical work, something that pushed me to write four ‘Taking Control’ books about breast cancer. I am currently completing a book about lymphoedema. I have published 200+ journal articles, presented at many international conferences, and am a breast cancer media spokesperson.
