Professor Daniel McCluskey is Dean of School for the School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. He graduated with a BEng Aerospace Engineering in 2003 from the University of Hertfordshire before gaining his PhD from Coventry University in 2009, concerned with Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of hydrocyclonic separation of invasive species transported via shipboard ballast water. Since joining the MMRG his work has focused on the rapid development of turn-key, fluid dynamics based, integrated biodetection systems. Working closely with the Scientific and Experimental R&D team within the MMRG, the Applied R&D team typically aim to raise the Technology Readiness Level of biodetection research concepts and prototypes from TRL1/2/3 to TRL5/6. Clients include the UK MoD and the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Porton Down), with collaborators on Industry and Research Council funded projects including Optisense Ltd., Fera Science Ltd and Bayer Cropscience. Current biodetection R&D projects have a focus on the development of integrated systems incorporating autonomous airborne pathogen collect/detect systems, sample processing and handling, real-time analysis using DNA amplification and remote reporting.Applications include:Biowarfare, crop protection & food security, woodland & plant biosecurity and aquaculture. -
