Professor David Latchman, CBE, is a leading UK academic, author and philanthropist, currently holding the position of Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck, University of London. As Vice-Chancellor, Professor Latchman is the chief academic and administrative officer, and has been responsible for the development of the university since his appointment in 2003. Professor Latchman holds a First-Class Honours BA degree, MA and PhD degree from the University of Cambridge. He also completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship at Imperial College London and has a DSC (higher doctorate) from the University of London. Professor Latchman serves as Chairman of the trustees of the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation, an organisation dedicated the empowerment of the Jewish community through education, employment, medical advancement, and welfare. He also serves as a trustee of the Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Philanthropic Foundation, as well as a number of other committees centred around education, and scientific and medical research in the UK and Israel. As well as this, Professor Latchman has authored and edited many academic publications. His books include Gene Control (Gene Regulation – 2010, expanded 2015), Eukaryotic Transcription Factors (five editions 1991-2008), Gene Regulation: a Eukaryotic Perspective (five editions 1990-2005), Transcription Factors: a Practical Approach (1999), and Genetic Manipulation of the Nervous System (1996). In January 2022, he was also appointed to the steering group for developing the Government’s Lifelong Loan Entitlement scheme, chaired by the Minister of State for Higher and Further Education.In 2022, professor Latchman was appointed to the Steering group for developing the Government’s Lifelong loan entitlement which is chaired by the Universities Minister Michele Donelan MP.
