Christopher Gibson is a Professor of Law and Director of the ADR Program and the Business Law and Financial Services Concentration at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, where he teaches and writes in the areas dispute resolution (domestic and international arbitration); international business transactions; intellectual property; international intellectual property; international investment law; international trade law; transactional skills and contract drafting, and Internet law. He writes in the field of international dispute settlement and intellectual property. His current book is The Protection of Intellectual Property under International Investment Law, with Dr. Simon Klopschinski and Dr. Henning Grosse Ruse-Khan (Oxford Univ. Press 2020).Professor Gibson has an active practice sitting as arbitrator, mediator and expert is complex commercial, intellectual property and technology cases. He is on the roster of arbitrators for a number of the leading arbitration institutions. Professor Gibson is on the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center’s 2021 List of the World’s Leading Technology Neutrals. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Boston International Arbitration Council. Professor Gibson has more than 25 years of experience serving as arbitrator, mediator and counsel in institutional, ad hoc and other international proceedings involving a wide variety of commercial, technology, intellectual property, life sciences, information technology, Internet domain name system, financial, construction and other commercial matters. He has accepted over 300 appointments as a single, presiding and panel arbitrator, as well as emergency arbitrator. Subject matters of cases have included technology, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, intellectual property, investments, insurance, joint venture agreements, financial and loan agreements, license agreements, commercial contracts, and more than 225 disputes involving domain names and trademarks.

In addition to my research and teaching responsibilities as a professor of the law school, I acted as Associate Academic Dean for 4 years, one of the law school’s primary academic officers. Coordinated academic affairs and curricular matters, and was responsible to maintain the integrity of the law school’s academic program, including ongoing development, planning, management and assessment of the program

Christopher Gibson is an Associate Professor at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, where he teaches and writes in the areas of arbitration, intellectual property, international business transactions, transactional skills and contract drafting, trade and investment law. Professor Gibson has had a successful career of service in the private and public international law sectors. Following law school, Professor Gibson was clerked for a federal judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, then served as a Legal Assistant at the Iran-United States Claim Tribunal in The Hague, The Netherlands, and was later engaged in private practice in San Francisco with the law firms of Howard Rice, and Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. Professor Gibson served for three years as section chief at the UN Compensation Commission (Head of the "C" Claims Division) in Geneva, a special division of the UN Security Council, followed by a four-year period as Senior Legal Officer of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center and later as Head of WIPO’s Electronic Commerce Law Section. At WIPO he was a principal officer responsible for developing recommendations for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which lead to implementation of the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) now in effect to handle conflicts between trademarks and domain names. Following his time with WIPO, Professor Gibson was a founding partner in the London office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP (a Washington, DC firm), where his practice focused on arbitration, international litigation, and transactional matters involving technology, intellectual property, contracts and licensing.

Before joining Suffolk Law School, Christopher Gibson was a partner in the London office of Steptoe & Johnson, where he specialized in the areas of international dispute resolution, technology and intellectual property. Professor Gibson represented clients in commercial conflicts, focusing on international arbitration and litigation, particularly where intellectual property, technology or complex international law issues are involved. He also advised clients on a wide variety of issues involving intellectual property and related commercial and regulatory matters. His practice focused on evaluating intellectual property and negotiating/drafting related agreements, particularly where international issues are involved

Professor Gibson covered the legal issues generated by electronic commerce, including copyright, trademark, domain name and enforcement issues, and he was a principal officer involved in WIPO's domain name work, including the dispute resolution procedures which ICANN adopted as the Uniform Domain Name Procedure (UDRP). He has extensive experience with the rules and rule-making procedures used by WIPO, WTO and other international organisations.

General commercial and litigation and arbitration practice, with specialization in intellectual property matters, alternate dispute resolution and IP counseling.

Chief attorney responsible for Commission's presentation of claims to panel of Commissioners appointed to decide claims for individual loss. Managed legal development of issues and responses, and development of computer systems for processing over 400,000 claims for individual loss, representing approximately US$ 7.6 Billion. Supervised "C" Unit with staff of six lawyers and 18 paralegals. Conducted external relations with governments, intergovernmental and professional bodies.

Worked in all aspects of firm's practice, with emphasis on appellate litigation and corporate and securities matters.

Served United States Commissioners Richard C. Allison and Charles N. Brower.Worked on international arbitrations concerning losses associated with Iranian revolution. Drafted awards and dissents applying international commercial and public law. Participated in deliberations of the panels.
